Lexicographical Humor

Deference Dept.

I just found this nameplate (while looking for something completely different, Sydney J. Harris-style, naturally). It used to be affixed to the outside of the common dictionary library area at a publisher where I once worked, and when that publisher donated those books to the Dictionary Society of North America, I got to take the nameplate, too. Which I can now share with you!

(We never did figure out whether we were supposed to be the deferrers or the demanders of deference ... I suppose we switched roles depending on the context.)

    This is brilliant.

Of course everyone who comes to your door must defer to you!

This reminds me of Steve Wozniak's department of defiance story.
