The Cutest Dictionary Illustration Never Published (Until Now)

According to John Carrera (whose presentation this morning of his art book, the Pictorial Webster's was a bit hit) this illustration was commissioned for a dictionary but never used ... what a shame!
Check out the link above -- it's an incredible (and incredibly beautiful and painstaking) project.

Oooh! I've seen the Pictorial Websters at their studio in Waltham, MA. A very cool project.

Maybe the next conference is for all the artists. Add Margaret Flood's shapetionary?

Love the hamster.
(I just found this site from Dress A Day and saw your Google video - I read the front matter in my going off to college gift dictionary.)

Hi Erin.
I saw you on Rachel Ray last week and was completely amazed. Looking at you was like looking at me 20 years ago. There is an unbelievable likeness. I checked you out on websites to confirm what I saw on TV.
Even my family agreed that you and I look alike. I will send you a photo if I have an address. It was a very weird feeling to see someone who looks just like me, only much younger.

Oh, that hamster is just too cute! Great little illustration! I found this site blog-hopping, which I love to do in my free time from being a fiberartworker. I love words -- each has its own uniquely delicious taste! I've sidebarred your blog so I can come back often!!

The hamster brought back a grade school memory for me. I was writing a report on raccoons and needed a photo (National Geographic type) to accompany it but couldn't find one anywhere. My architect father drew a racoon illustration for me. Somehow I knew Mrs. Harding wouldn't have a sense of humor about it. She didn't.
